Race discrimination gig up for grabs

Tim Soutphommasane is finishing up in his role as race discrimination commissioner after five years with the Australian Human Right Commission.

The Human Rights watchdog is hunting for a new race discrimination commissioner, with Tim Soutphommasane finishing up in the role after five years with the Australian Human Right Commission.

"Whoever the next commissioner is, they must speak up for those who experience discrimination, defend racial equality, and do the job without fear or favour," Mr Soutphommasane tweeted.

Attorney General Christian Porter confirmed the government had commenced a merit selection process and applications close May 11.

The new appointment will begin in August.
