A survey by the University of Western Sydney has found that racist views are rare in the indigenous community.

Professor Kevin Dunn says 12,500 people were surveyed across the country over six years about multiculturalism, and 200 of them were Aborigines or Torres Strait Islanders.

The overarching finding was that indigenous Australians are very positive about cultural diversity, he told SBS.

The survey found 91 per cent of indigenous respondents thought it was a good thing for society to be made up of different cultures, he adds.

According to Dunn, the survey also found indigenous respondents were more likely to recognise racism.

In answer to the question: "Australians from a British background have a privileged position in society", 59 per cent of indigenous respondents agreed, compared to 50% of non-indigenous respondents.
