Radio host has friendly chat with Shorten

There are more bouquets than bricks when Labor Leader Bill Shorten goes on air with controversial radio presenter Alan Jones.

It's not every day controversial broadcaster Alan Jones has nice words for the political left.

But while he may not agree with Bill Shorten on most issues, Jones wasn't stingy with the compliments when the Labor leader went on his radio show on Thursday.

There were congratulations for running an "energetic" campaign and motivating the party, and good wishes for Saturday's polling day.

Jones also agreed with some of the opposition leader's points - about a costly plebiscite on gay marriage and revenue needed to pay for company tax cuts.

"This, I think, is a very valid point that Mr Shorten has not received appropriate credit for," he said on the latter issue.

There were points of difference, however, and Jones made it known - on budget debt and union misbehaviour.

The broadcaster told his thousands of listeners about the importance of taking on the issue, not the man, when it came to politics.

"Even if you violently disagree with people, the one thing I don't think you can deny is that these people do have the best interests of the country at heart," he said.

The interview finished the same way it started, on a jovial and friendly tone.

"Can I just ... congratulate you on the energy you've given to your own people and the extent to which you've reinvigorated your party?" Jones told Mr Shorten.

"It's no mean feat."
