Raider Oldfield signs new NRL deal

Canberra journeyman Michael Oldfield's rich vein of form has earned him a new deal, signing a contract with the Raiders until the end of the 2020 season.

Fresh off a hat-trick, journeyman Michael Oldfield has penned a new two-year contract with Canberra.

The Raiders are his fifth NRL club, but the 27-year-old's outstanding recent performances mean he will be in the nation's capital until the end of 2020.

Injuries and suspensions have meant Oldfield has gone from being left out of the team altogether to cementing a spot in the starting side.

Oldfield has played just 36 NRL games since making his debut in 2010 after stints with Manly, the Roosters, South Sydney and Penrith, but he feels he's found a home in Canberra.

"I'm a beaches boy, I grew up living around Manly so while I do miss the beach I've really warmed to this capital so I'm loving it," Oldfield said.

"It is tough (being in and out of the team) but it's something I'm used to over my whole career.

"As I've matured in age it's reflecting in me handling the situation better."

Oldfield's games this season have been on the wing, but he could be playing in another position on Friday against Cronulla.

Captain Jarrod Croker has been ruled out for the rest of the season to have surgery on his dislocated knee cap, meaning the Raiders have a hole to fill in the centre.

Oldfield sealed his hat-trick in the 38-12 win against North Queensland on Saturday night with a blazing run down the length of GIO Stadium.
