Raiders' English NRL recruits impress

Canberra have struggled to close out NRL games in recent seasons, but the Raiders are hoping their English recruits will rectify those issues.

Canberra co-captain Josh Hodgson says fellow English internationals John Bateman and Ryan Sutton have already lifted training standards at the Raiders.

The Wigan premiership players joined the NRL club during the off-season, boosting the Raiders' UK contingent to four.

Second-rower Bateman and prop Sutton have fitted in seamlessly to life in the nation's capital, linking up with Hodgson and Elliott Whitehead.

Their inclusions will prove vital in the Raiders' push to play finals for the first time in three years.

Canberra's past two seasons have been blighted by an inability to finish off games, something Hodgson believes Bateman and Sutton will help with.

"They've both played a lot of games for England, won grand finals over there, so they know what it takes to win big games and what it takes in the lead-up during the week," Hodgson told AAP.

"I've been really impressed with the attitude of all the boys at the club. I've seen a big difference in the place during the pre-season.

"We've never really had a bad attitude to training but the buy-in from everyone in the squad has been unbelievable."

Bateman is coming off an impressive season for Wigan where he was named in the English Super League's Dream Team.

He missed out on the Man of Steel award, the Super League's top individual honour, to sacked North Queensland fullback Ben Barba.

Sutton will join forces with Queensland enforcer Josh Papalii and help fill the void up front left by Junior Paulo and Shannon Boyd's departures.
