Rain brings relief to bushfire ravaged Tas

Rain has tempered massive blazes across Tasmania but authorities warn the state's bushfire crisis is not over.

Rain has brought much-needed relief to Tasmanian communities threatened for weeks by massive bushfires but authorities are warning residents the danger is not over.

The Great Pine Tier, Riveaux Road, Gell River and Brittons Swamp blazes received up 30 millimetres of rain on Wednesday night and into Thursday.

While the deluge has given weary crews and worried residents a reprieve, the Tasmania Fire Service says it is not enough to put the fires out, some of which sparked before Christmas.

"The rain is certainly welcomed by all the crews on the ground but it's certainly not over by any stretch of the imagination," Tasmania Fire Service Operations Officer Mark Dobson said.

"We're at the mercy of the weather and the weather can change pretty rapidly."

The heaviest falls were near the Western Tiers in the northern plateau and northeast highlands.

While the wet weather has tempered the bushfire risk, low cloud has hampered firefighting efforts, particularly on the rugged west coast and conditions are slippery and dangerous for crews on the ground.

"We can't get people into the fireground, where we've had to airlift them in," Mr Dobson said.

Tasmania's health department has advised residents not to drink rainwater or give it to pets, if it smells, tastes or looks unusual, as ash and debris from the bushfires may have contaminated supply.

Crews will spend the next few days and probably weeks patrolling fire edges and extinguishing hotspots.

The fires have destroyed seven homes in the Huon Valley, southwest of Hobart, and on the Central Plateau.

Vast amounts of wilderness have been charred by blazes that have burned 195,000 hectares, about three per cent of the island state.

A near-century-old trapper's hut has been destroyed and the popular Tahune Airwalk significantly damaged.
