It is only the rain that has troubled the scorer at the SCG for most of the third Test between Australia and the West Indies, as more than 100mm has fallen over the course of the match.

Play was abandoned at 1pm (AEDT) on the fourth day on Wednesday as rain washed out a second straight day.

It is the first time consecutive Test days have been washed out in Australia since the SCG suffered the same fate in the 1989-90 season.

SCG curator Tom Parker emptied out his rain gauge on Wednesday morning after it had collected more than 100mm of rain since the Test began on Sunday.

Australia bowled 75 overs on the first day, but only 11.2 overs on day two as the start of the storm cell hovering for days over the Australian east coast moved in.

The constant rain that has swept across the ground over the past two days has ruled out any chance of a result in the final match in the three-game series and the final Test of the season.

Cricket Australia will throw the gates open for free on the final day on Thursday.

The West Indies are on 7-248 in their first innings. Denesh Ramdin is 30 not out and Kemar Roach is yet to score.

After Thursday, the summer moves into limited-overs mode as Australia host India in Perth on Tuesday to start their five-match ODI series.
