Rain easing in Vic after morning drenching

Wet, windy weather in Victoria is expected to ease after a significant cold front passed through the state this morning.

A cold front which passed through Victoria on Wednesday morning is beginning to ease after bringing up to 35mm of rain to parts of the state.

The front arrived in Melbourne's CBD about 7.30am, however the city was spared from the worst of the drenching.

The Wimmera region in the west copped 30mm of rain and the small town of Trentham topped the list at 35mm.

"It has eased up in western Victoria, and later in the afternoon we will see it ease up in central parts of the state," Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Richard Carlyon told AAP.

"Tomorrow will be a much drier day, with less than 5mm of rain forecast."

In the past 24 hours, the State Emergency Service responded to 74 calls for help, with most relating to trees down, building damage and some minor flooding.

A flood watch has been issued for the Ovens and King Rivers area in the state's northeast.
