Australian No.1s Nick Kyrgios and Daria Gavrilova have been asked to hold fire as relentless rain in New York plays havoc with the US Open schedule.

Kyrgios and Gavrilova were due to open their title quests on Wednesday morning (AEST) before officials abandoned plans to start any new matches.

Persistent showers flooded Flushing Meadows, leaving only the centre-court program - under a closed roof - and a handful of early matches to go ahead.

Australian wildcard Alex De Minaur was trailing Austrian sixth seed Dominic Thiem 6-4 6-1 1-0 before their first-round tussle on the Grandstand court was postponed until Thursday.

Kyrgios - playing fellow Australian John Millman - and Gavrilova also had their first-round encounters cancelled for the day.

Kyrgios or Millman will give Australia at least two men in the second round with Jordan Thompson.

In-form Gavrilova is looking join Ashleigh Barty, Arina Rodionova and Ajla Tomljanovic in advancing in the women's draw.

Seeded 25th but ranked 20th after her breakthrough title win in New Haven, Gavrilova plays American qualifier Allie Kiick chasing her first-ever main-draw win at Flushing Meadows after winning the junior crown in 2010.

Kyrgios, the 14th seed, and Millman are clashing for the first time. All up, there will be eight Australians in action on a bumper day three.

Giantkilling Jordan Thompson will look to back up his win over 13th seed Jack Sock when he takes on Italian Thomas Fabbiano.

Barty plays Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich, Tomljanovic faces Serb Aleksandra Krunic and Rodionova squares off with Greece's Maria Sakkari. AUSSIES IN ACTION ON DAY THREE OF THE US OPEN (prefix denotes seeding):
