Strong winds and rain are set to ease over Victoria's east following forecasts of a month's worth of rain expected to fall in one day.

Gusts of up to 143km/h were recorded over the state's alpine areas early on Saturday, alongside falls of more than 70mm since 9am on Friday.

Farmers in East Gippsland were earlier urged to move their stock to higher ground, ahead of between 50mm and 100mm forecast fall into Saturday.

Since 9am, Gabo Island recorded 21mm, Mt Elizabeth 9mm and Mallacoota 36mm.

"Most of it (the rain) was overnight and we've seen it contract further east throughout Saturday," forecaster Michael Efron told AAP.

Winds remained between 90 and 100km/h over alpine areas on Saturday afternoon, with a severe weather warning still in place.

Meanwhile, a flood warning and watch remains current for the Watts River at Healesville and the Gippsland region, respectively.

The wet weather came as a welcome relief from ""three months of almost drought-like conditions," senior meteorologist Kevin Parkyn earlier said.
