In a frightening proposition for rival NBL clubs, Adelaide 36ers coach Joey Wright believes superstar guard Jerome Randle can get better by aggressively looking for his own shot and being more selfish.
In Thursday's eagerly-anticipated duel between the NBL's two leading scorers and premier point guards, Randle steamrolled Melbourne United rival Casper Ware in the Sixers' barnstorming 100-73 triumph.
But it was a different story early.
Ware had already racked up 12 points before Randle troubled the scorers with 2:50 remaining in the third term. But by the full-time siren sounded, red-hot Randle had 19 points and eight assists, while Ware did not add to his tally.
Wright believes Randle's early difficulties were about figuring out his own best methods and had nothing to do with Ware.
"I don't really think Casper had his number (early)," Wright said.
"He (Randle) was just trying to find that balance between getting the ball to his teammates and looking for his own shot.
"We need him to stay aggressive and on the front foot offensively. I thought he stepped back a little bit.
"He did pick it up and it just shows you how brilliant he is.
"I don't think it had anything to do with Casper at all."
Randle sparked Adelaide's furious finish but it was Nathan Sobey who kept the hosts in touch initially, following a sluggish start.
Wright believes Sobey played 'close' to his best game for the club.
"It would be close," Wright said. "32 (points), eight (rebounds) and six (assists) with not many turnovers (one), great intensity, great execution on offence and defence.
"That was definitely one of his better games."
