The husband of the woman who alleges she had an affair with Mike Rann has pleaded guilty to assaulting the South Australian premier.

Richard Wayne Phillips was placed on a good behaviour bond, but no conviction was recorded, following his appearance in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Thursday.

The estranged husband of former parliamentary waitress Michelle Chantelois pleaded guilty to assaulting the premier with a rolled up magazine at a corporate function in Adelaide last October.

After the assault, Ms Chantelois alleged she had a lengthy affair with Mr Rann while married to Phillips. The premier denies the affair, but has admitted to a "flirty" friendship.

On Wednesday evening, during a televised debate with Opposition Leader Isobel Redmond, Mr Rann publicly apologised for the "friendship".

"If my friendship, before I was married, has caused any stress to anyone, including Ms Chantelois and her family, that I regret that and I apologise for that," he said.

And if he had disappointed the people of South Australia, he said he apologised to them as well. Ms Chantelois has rejected the apology.

"I do not consider that an apology, I don't feel there is any sincerity in that at all and I do not find it acceptable," Ms Chantelois told ABC radio.
