Rape accused already on assault charges

An 18-year-old man accused of rape has only been in Australia for 18 months and is homeless, a Brisbane court has been told.

An 18-year-old accused of raping a woman after following her to a Brisbane hotel was already facing assault charges.

The Brisbane Magistrates Court was told the teen has only been in Australia for 18 months, was homeless and there were "concerns for his intellectual capacity".

He is facing charges of rape, assault with intent to rape and deprivation of liberty after allegedly attacking a woman on Sunday in Brisbane's CBD.

It's alleged the 18-year-old man initially approached a 27-year-old woman and asked for money at Spring Hill around 3.30pm on Sunday.

After she refused the request, police say he followed her to a nearby hotel where he raped and assaulted her before she managed to fight him off and a member of the public called police.

The woman suffered non-serious head injuries and he was arrested in a nearby park.

His legal aid representative told Magistrate Jacqui Payne on Monday that the teen's solicitor, who is handling his assault and robbery charges, had some concerns for the mental capacity of his client.

"He has a low cognitive ability and that was passed on to me from the solicitor who represents him in relation to the other charges," the legal aid solicitor said.

The teen has been remanded in custody to reappear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on December 19.
