Rare Charlie Chaplin coins at Perth Mint

The Perth Mint is celebrating Charlie Chaplin's contribution to the film industry with the release of gold and silver commemorative coins.

Mime and comedy icon Charlie Chaplin has been further immortalised with some rare gold and silver coins at The Perth Mint.

The English filmmaker wrote, directed and starred in more than 80 short and feature films over several decades.

The Perth Mint is releasing a limited edition 1/4oz 99.99 per cent pure gold coin displaying a sculpted portrait of The Tramp, surrounded by the words "Charlie Chaplin" and "100 years of laughter".

A 1oz 99.9 per cent pure silver coin has also been issued.

Using lenticular lenses, the design features Chaplin walking as shown in the final scene of the 1928 silent movie, The Circus.

The Perth Mint will release 1000 gold coins, valued at $750 each, in an MP4 box which plays a short film clip to Chaplin's music when the lid is opened.

A further 5000 silver coins, valued ay $109 each, will be available in a framed latex case displaying both sides of the coin.
