Re-elected coalition to fund airport road

Both the federal coalition and Labor have committed millions of dollars for road improvements to access Hobart Airport.

The federal coalition has confirmed it will cough up funds for roadworks near Hobart Airport to eliminate bottlenecks, more than a month after Labor made a similar pledge.

Tasmanian infrastructure minister Rene Hidding on Wednesday said the funding plan which includes $24 million from Canberra and $6 million from the state, will allow traffic to travel unimpeded "over the top" of access to the airport.

"The increasingly frequent traffic gridlock at the current roundabout creates a negative first impression for interstate and international visitors which is at odds with Tasmania's reputation as a lifestyle and tourist destination," the minister told parliament.
