Reaction to citizenship case ruling

Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce says he's not surprised by the High Court to disqualify him from parliament.

REACTION TO THE HIGH COURT CITIZENSHIP CASE

"The decision of the court today is clearly not the outcome we were hoping for but the business of government goes on." - Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

"In my gut I thought this is the way it was going to go." - Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce.

"(Mr Joyce has) learnt nothing from this humiliation. One could expect a bit of humility." - Labor frontbencher Anthony Albanese.

"We're not planning any mischief." - Deputy Labor leader Tanya Plibersek.

"I will continue to fight for rural, regional and remote Australians, no matter where my life path takes me." - Deputy Nationals leader Fiona Nash.

"I accept the decision entirely. I'm disappointed to be leaving federal parliament but that opens another door." - disqualified One Nation senator Malcolm Roberts.

"He's brought so much to parliament that has been lacking in others." - One Nation leader Pauline Hanson says of Roberts.

"We'll do whatever we can to make sure this is a bad government that gets turfed out. People have had a gutful of politics because they see people within the system acting in their own interests rather than in the national interest." - Greens leader Richard Di Natale.

"Just remember I'm one of the six most powerful people in Australia at the moment." - Independent MP Bob Katter.

"The irony of the decision is not lost on me as it has always been my plan to leave the federal parliament, to resign from the Senate, which I will now be doing in the very near future." - Nick Xenophon.

"I am gutted for my colleagues Barnaby and Fiona. I look forward to getting stuck back into delivering long-term results for all Queenslanders." - restored cabinet minister Matt Canavan.

"I actually love elections. I've enjoyed the eight that I have contested but my wife doesn't." - Tony Windsor announcing he will not contest the by-election in Mr Joyce's NSW seat of New England.
