REACTION TO DONALD TRUMP'S SPEECH:

* CNN snap poll of viewers of the speech

- 57 per cent had a "very positive reaction" to the address

- 18 per cent a somewhat positive reaction

- 24 per cent said it had a negative effect

- based on tweets that mentioned Trump's name was slightly more negative than positive shortly after his speech

* Hillary Clinton

- Clinton senior adviser John Podesta dismissed the speech as painting "a dark picture of an America in decline"

- called it a reminder Trump "is temperamentally unfit and totally unqualified to be president of the United States"

* Ohio Republican Governor John Kasich

- Kasich senior adviser John Weaver said in a tweet Trump had delivered the "saddest, darkest, most depressing acceptance speech in modern history".
