'Ready to govern' theme for Abbott launch

The federal coalition's election campaign launch in Brisbane this Sunday will focus on Tony Abbott's plan for the economy and jobs.

The coalition's campaign launch in Brisbane will focus on the theme of being "ready to govern", senior Liberals say.

Among the guests at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre event are expected to be former prime minister John Howard and Queensland Premier Campbell Newman.

Liberal spokesman Jamie Briggs said the launch would have two aims.

"We will be overwhelmingly positive about our plan for the economy and jobs," he told AAP.

"And secondly it will reinforce the message to people that we've done the work - we are stable, strong, disciplined and we are ready to govern the country."

However, two weeks out from the election there are also likely to be some barbs thrown at Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.

"It will be overwhelmingly positive, but I think people are pretty aware that this guy is a fake," Mr Briggs said.

Deputy Liberal leader Julie Bishop, who was the warm-up act at the August 2010 campaign launch, will again lead a satirical attack on the prime minister.

Mr Howard's presence will be used to underline the strong and stable government message.

"John Howard is a reminder of what a good government was like," Mr Briggs said.

A spokesman for Mr Newman said the premier welcomed Queensland hosting the launch and the opportunity for voters to hear Mr Abbott outline "a plan to build a strong, prosperous economy and a safe, secure Australia".
