Real derby draw lets Barca off Liga hook

Champions Barcelona failed to win for a third Spanish La Liga game in a row while Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid drew in the latest derby at the Bernabeu.

Real Madrid have missed the chance to go top of Spain's La Liga after a goalless derby draw with Atletico Madrid while Barcelona dropped points at home to Athletic Bilbao.

Real's Thibaut Courtois made two exceptional saves in the first half at the Bernabeu while his opposite number, Jan Oblak, rescued the visitors with two stops after the interval.

Gareth Bale was substituted at the start of the second with a suspected groin injury although Real almost snatched a winner in stoppage time when captain Sergio Ramos headed wide.

Real have now failed to beat Atletico at home in the league in their past six attempts, with their last victory coming in December 2012 when Jose Mourinho was in charge.

"I'm not satisfied with the result because we always want to win and we deserved to win," Real boss Julen Lopetegui said.

Atletico coach Diego Simeone cursed his team's inability to take their chances.

"Watching how we played in the first half I leave with a bitter taste at not winning but then looking at the second half I think a draw is fair," the Argentine said.

Real are joint top locked on 14 points with Barca, who have a slightly superior goal difference despite their surprise 1-1 draw with Bilbao at the Nou Camp.

Atletico, 12 points, drop down to fourth, while Sevilla climbed to third, with 13 points, after winning 3-1 at Eibar.

With Lionel Messi rested for most of the match, Barcelona failed to win for the third consecutive league outing.

Substitute Munir El Haddadi averted a first home defeat for Barca in more than two years by sliding in an equaliser in the 84th minute, meeting a cross by 55th-minute substitute Messi.

Oscar de Marcos had given the visitors a deserved lead in the 41st minute.

Barca coach Ernesto Valverde explained his "risky decision" to field a starting XI without Messi and midfield anchor Sergio Busquets with "four games in the space of 10 days".

"I have to think about what might happen and I thought Leo and Busquets had to rest, knowing that we have a very complicated match on Wednesday (against Tottenham in the Champions League) and we have a large squad," he told a news conference.

Sevilla cruised to victory at Eibar, in a match that had to be stopped for a few minutes in the second half because fans fell onto the pitch when a railing collapsed.

Some fans were carried away on stretchers, although local media said no serious injuries were immediately reported.

The railing in the stands behind one of the goals broke as fans pressed forward after a 59th-minute penalty was converted by Ever Banega.

Andre Silva opened the scoring for the victors while Banega and Eibar's Joan Jordan both scored late.

Valencia's winless streak is finally over after seven league games courtesy of a first-half goal by Kevin Gameiro - and a second-half penalty save by goalkeeper Neto - in a 1-0 win at Real Soeciedad.
