Rebound in coalition's support: Newspoll

The coalition is seeing a rebound in popularity on a two-party preferred basis, a quarterly Newspoll analysis shows, but it isn't enough to overtake Labor.

The coalition has recovered ground to poll at its highest level on a two-party preferred basis not seen since Malcolm Turnbull's tenure as prime minister but still lags behind Labor, a Newspoll analysis reveals.

The coalition's overall vote has also rebounded in the five largest capitals, rising four points to 38 per cent compared with the final quarter of last year, according to a quarterly analysis of Newspolls taken for The Australian.

However, Labor continues to hold the lead in the primary vote. More worrying for the coalition, its support in the regions seems to have collapsed, with the indication preference deals will play a major role in deciding the outcome of the federal election.

The Newspoll used a sample size of 6393 voters across the capitals and regional areas between January 24 and March 10.
