A Samsung washing machine first recalled in 2013 is believed to be behind a house fire in Melbourne which left an elderly woman suffering from smoke inhalation.

MFB investigators say the fire in Reservoir on Thursday was started when the faulty top loader caught fire.

"The Samsung top loader had previously been recalled for safety reasons," the brigade said in a statement on Friday.

"MFB is urging residents to check their Samsung washing machines to ensure they are not on the national recall list."

Firefighters contained Thursday's blaze to the laundry which was destroyed.

Samsung first initiated a recall for six models of its top loader washing machine models in 2013 and repeated the recall in September last year stating "there are still thousands of affected machines that are yet to be serviced or

otherwise retrieved".

Samsung has won back-to-back Shonkys from Consumer watchdog Choice after recalling its potentially dangerous Galaxy Note7 smartphone this year and failing to advertise its top loader washing machine recall on TV in 2015.

Samsung expects another $3 billion hit to profit from Note 7 failure

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd on Friday said it expects to take a hit to its operating profit of about $3 billion over the next two quarters due to the discontinuation of its fire-prone Galaxy Note 7 smartphone.

The South Korean tech giant said in a statement it expected the blow to profit to be in the mid-2 trillion won range in the fourth quarter and about 1 trillion won ($897.06 million) for the first quarter of 2017.
