One of the central characters in SBS documentary mini-series Struggle Street has been nominated to win a community spirit award for her social work.

Ivanka Pelikan, who runs the Graceades Cottage in Bidwell, just north of Mount Druitt, was nominated for the Pride of Australia Community Spirit Medal by co-worker Janice O'Neill.

"I'm just so very humbled," Mrs Pelikan told The Daily Telegraph.

"I'm just Ivanka and it's lovely they want to nominate me, but I'm just doing the job I love."

Graceades Cottage provides resources and programs that focus on education, vocation, health, leisure and recreation, particularly for young people.

The Pride of Australia awards are given out annually by News Corp to recognise community endeavours and "ordinary Australians who do extraordinary things".
