New figures on illicit drugs in Australia show arrests and seizures hit new records in 2015/16.

AUSTRALIA'S LATEST ILLICIT DRUG DATA SHOWS RECORD LEVELS

* Number of drug seizures hits a record 115,000 in 2015/16, up 85 per cent since 2006/07.

* Number of drug arrests hits a record 155,000, increasing almost 90 per cent over the decade.

* Number of clandestine labs detected decreased from 667 in 2014/15 to 575 in 2015/16, but still jumped more than 60 per cent over the decade.

* Cannabis accounted for the highest number of arrests and seizures.

* Cannabis arrests hit a record 80,000, seizures hit a record 61,000 and detection at the border hit a record 7500.

* There were 48,000 arrests for amphetamines and 39,000 seizures.

* There were 4000 cocaine seizures and 2600 arrests, with almost 3000 detections at the border.

* The weight of drugs seized was 21 tonnes, the fourth highest amount on record.
