Record funds spent on local film content

Blockbuster Hollywood productions might have been absent last year, but local film and television content went to record levels.

Dora the Explorer has arrived to boost Australian drama following a drop in spending on film and television productions.

Screen Australia's latest drama report reflects big-budget Hollywood productions not shooting in the country last financial year.

While foreign films were almost absent, leading to a decline in overall spending, investment on local productions went to record levels and that has Screen Australia optimistic.

The local film and TV figure sat at $718 million, up seven per cent on last year.

Screen Australia's chief operating officer Michael Brealey said the next report would look different.

Dora the Explorer film, starring Desperate Housewives' star Eva Longoria, began shooting in Queensland in August.

Blockbuster film Godzilla vs Kong and hyped TV series Reef Break are also getting ready to shoot on the Gold Coast.

Mr Brealey said there would be a continued focus on local content following the success of TV dramas Mystery Road, Playing for Keeps, Mr Inbetween, along with film hit Ladies in Black.

"We've seen some incredible film, television and online projects go into production during this period, providing industry jobs across the whole of Australia," he said.

About 130 overall productions came at a cost of $814 million, compared to $1.3 billion on 166 titles a year earlier.

Local offerings next year include the first new serial in a decade, The Heights, which will have a 30-episode run, Channel Seven's Orange is the New Brown and Foxtel's Lambs of God.
