It comes after the deaths of two of its local volunteers in Syria while delivering aid in April.

Red Cross spokesman Peter Walton told SBS Radio more than 40 volunteer humanitarian workers have now died in the Syrian conflict.

"All humanitarian workers clearly have the Red Cross or Red Crescent emblem on all of their clothing and the emblem itself is a protected symbol under in humanitarian law and should be respected," he said.

"The Red Cross is calling on all parties on the conflict to grant Red Cross staff safe and unhindered access to the people affected by the conflict."

"If humanitarian workers  facing very difficult conditions are not given safe and unhindered access, the situation for the people in Syria looks even worse."
