Wales have fired another Rugby World Cup warning to Australia after edging ever closer to the Six Nations trophy with an epic 21-13 win over England.

Wales have one hand on the trophy after remaining the only undefeated team in the competition following their national-record 12th successive Test win.

In a match high on tension but low on quality in Cardiff, Wales made all the running but were behind until their first try 12 minutes from the end by lock Cory Hill.

Replacement five-eighth Dan Biggar made the last pass after a relentless 34-phase goal-line attack.

That put Wales 14-13 ahead and home fans in the sold-out Principality Stadium were singing for the first time since before kick-off.

Biggar converted from the sideline for 16-13 and then made the scoreline finally reflect Welsh dominance when his crosskick was juggled and caught by winger Josh Adams, who scrambled over the line for their second and final try in the 78th minute.

After an error-ridden first half by the hosts, who kept letting England off the hook, they kept better control of the ball in the second and pounded the visitors into submission.

It took more than an hour but Eddie Jones' men finally cracked after they led 10-3 at halftime, only to lose to the resurgent Welsh for the first time in six years.

It also put the Grand Slam in sight, with a visit to Scotland in two weeks, and back home for the last round against defending champions Ireland.

"We are obviously very pleased to get the win," Wales coach Warren Gatland said.

"It was a tough test match against a very good England team. We were much better in the second half."

Wales top the standings on 12 points with England, who have an easier run home with home games against Italy and Scotland to come, second on 10.

"We lost some momentum, gave a few penalties," Jones said.

"It was a game of fine margins and a few of our players were not at their best today. That can happen.

"Wales deserved their win. They are a tough side but they've got a couple of tough games and we'll be chasing them."

After also snapping a 13-match, 10-year losing streak against the Wallabies in November, Wales loom as Australia's chief Pool D rivals at the 2019 World Cup in Japan.

Topping the pool will be paramount if the Wallabies are to avoid a likely semi-final showdown with the defending champion All Blacks come October.
