Fast bowler Jackson Bird proved decisive as Tasmania secured an eleventh-hour win over South Australia to jump into third place on the Sheffield Shield standings.

Tasmania reached 4-110 to pass the victory target final in the final half-hour of the final day's play for a six-wicket victory over the Shield's bottom side.

There was a rare failure with the bat for Matthew Wade (15), but the Tigers had few difficulties reaching the required target on Tuesday after South Australia collapsed in a heap just before tea.

Bird was the hero for Tasmania taking 7-59, for an 11-wicket match haul and move to the top of the Shield wicket-taker's list for the season.

After conceding a 210-run first innings' deficit, South Australia seemed to have done enough to save the match only to suffer an extraordinary collapse of six wickets for three runs, including 4-0 off six balls.

The lower-order capitulation undid the good work of opener Jake Weatherald who hit an impressive 150, bringing up his fourth first class century with a six off the bowling of part-timer Wade.

The 24-year-old's 259-ball innings, included 15 fours and five sixes.

Callum Ferguson (60) combined with Weatherald for a 151-run fourth wicket partnership.

But Bird was unwavering in the Adelaide heat bowling 24.5 overs, after claiming 4-53 in the first innings.
