Community groups have welcomed the High Court ruling on the Malaysia asylum swap deal, calling on both sides of politics to recognise the human cost of their detention policies.

At Australia's largest asylum seeker welfare centre, news of the High Court decision was greeted with cheers.

The Melbourne Asylum Seekers Resource Centre has helped more than 7,000 refugees in the community since it was set up ten years ago.

Thousands of kilometres way, there were also celebrations on Christmas Island.
