Recently-arrived refugees in Perth are the first to take part in a course that aims to prepare them for the rental market.

The Renter Ready course is offered as part of the Mercy Settlement Grants Program, which aims to give new arrivals to the country the skills they need to secure and keep a rental property.

The majority of those taking part in the Renter Ready course have spent considerable time in camps while their refugee applications were processed.

"The main thing we've found is if people have been in the camps for a long time and they lose some of their skills, when they come here and they have a house to go into, they don't necessarily know how to take care of it properly, and if they lose their bond or if they don't get another house, they've no accommodation and that causes a lot of problems," Renter Ready course instructor Maggie Brechany said.
