Two refugees have been moved from Papua New Guinea's Manus Island detention centre to temporary housing near the provincial capital, Lorengau.

The transfer comes after more than a week of protests and a three-day stand-off that ended on Monday, which refugee advocates say was prompted by plans to send some of 50 men granted refugee status to the Lorengau accommodation.

The detainees are worried about their safety at Lorengau because of a lack of security.

Authorities in PNG confirmed on Wednesday the transfer of an Iranian man and a Pakistani man.

While they will be able to receive language training and other education at the Lorengau facility, they are not permitted to work on Manus.

The plan is to eventually resettle them in other parts of PNG.

Immigration Minister Peter Dutton said on Tuesday that "minimal force" was used to remove a large number of detainees from the Manus Island compound who had barricaded the entrance to Delta block.

Some of the men were transferred to a jail near Lorengau. Refugee advocates have claimed some of those removed from the detention centre were mistreated.
