A former prosecutor at the United States military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, has dismissed concerns from a US senator that five detainees exchanged for an American soldier held captive in Afghanistan are "the worst of the worst."

Those were the words of Republican senator John McCain describing the so-called Taliban five -- men who were released to broker the return of Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, taken by the Taliban five years ago.

But retired Colonel Morris Davis says the men were not regarded as high-value detainees, and American authorities had no intention of prosecuting them.

Colonel Davis is speaking to Kristina Kukolja.
