Religious freedom still remains an issue eight months on from the gay marriage vote, a federal cabinet minister says.
Nationals frontbencher Matt Canavan said he is waiting for a review of religious freedom to be finished, but he has concerns.
He tried to amend the same-sex marriage legislation to include specific protections for religious organisations, but they did not pass the Senate.
"I do think that there remains an issue in this country to ensure that fundamental freedoms (remain)," Senator Canavan told the ABC on Sunday.
"There ain't much more fundamental freedom in our country than the freedom of religion."

Former Howard government minister Philip Ruddock is leading a review of religious freedoms, and Senator Canavan said he had an open mind about what it would find.
