Remembering Nelson Mandela: Brian Thomson reports

SBS reporter Brian Thomson is in Johannesburg to cover the ongoing reaction as the world mourns the death of South African anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Opposition Leader Bill Shorten will be among more than 50 heads of state and government who will attend memorial events for peace icon Nelson Mandela.

The memorial service will be held on Tuesday at the Soccer City stadium, where Mandela made his last major public appearance during the 2010 football World Cup, while a smaller group will travel to the Nobel peace laureate's rural childhood village Qunu for his funeral service and burial next Sunday.

Streets of Mandela's suburb filled by mourners

SBS's Brian Thomson reports from the Johannesburg suburb where Nelson Mandela most recently lived, Houghton. In this wealthy part of town, the streets are filled with dancing mourners, as elsewhere in the country.

South Africa declares 10 days of national mourning

Saturday, 7 December

South Africa has begun 10  days of national mourning out of respect for Nelson Mandela. Across the country, flags have been lowered to half mast and floral tributes have been laid at key landmarks from Mandela's life. Brian Thomson reports.
