Thousands of people have attended a rally to mark the anniversary of the Soweto uprising in South Africa, with the focus this year on the health of the country's most prominent anti-apartheid campaigner.

President Jacob Zuma told the crowd that Nelson Mandela's condition remains serious, but he is making a 'sustained' recovery and is able to 'engage' with visiting members of his family.

Among those also attending, there was also the man who sparked the 1976 student uprising against white minority rule, which saw at least 176 students lose their lives during the riots that followed.
