The Perth Scorchers dealt the Melbourne Renegades their first loss of BBL07 and Aaron Finch's lean run continued at Etihad Stadium on Friday night.
But neither is cause for alarm according to the Renegades skipper.
The home side made 9-130 after they were sent in.
The total looked about 20 runs short of par and it turned out to be the case despite a late fight back that required Ashton Turner to carve a six off the last ball of the 19th over for the win.
The result kept the Scorchers' perfect winning record against the Renegades in seven Big Bash League tournaments intact.
"I think it's important to start the tournament well," Finch said after his side dropped to a 2-1 record.
"We're sitting nicely ... if you gave me 2-and-1 at the start I probably would have taken that, to be honest.
"But we still feel like we let one slip (against Perth).
"One person can change a game and unfortunately we didn't have that guy to go on and get a 50 or 60 to win the game."
Mitchell Johnson was the Scorchers' best bowler with 3-13 from his four overs.
The Scorchers finished on 7-133, with Michael Klinger anchoring the innings with 37 runs from 37 balls in front of 30,108 fans.
Andrew Tye, the BBL's leading wicket-taker, opened the bowling with Johnson. He was expensive but took his tally to 12 wickets with figures of 3-37 from his four overs.
Finch is off to a poor start in BBL07 having made just 12 runs from his three innings after his first-over duck.
He doesn't feel like he's out of form, but admits he'd like some runs with the one-day series against England around the corner.
"I'm not sure ... I suppose when guys are touch and go," he replied when asked if national selectors take into account T20 form when picking an ODI squad.
"If there's two guys fighting for the same spot I guess it would be whoever is in the best form at the the time.
"It's hard to say, crossing formats, whether they do take that into account. Hopefully not at the moment.
"I'd love some runs - 12 runs from an opener and the captain isn't really acceptable - but I think the next game (they'll come)."
