Renewables push sends NT airport solar

A solar farm will help power the Darwin International Airport from March, offsetting about a quarter of the airport's annual energy consumption.

Darwin International Airport will be flying solar next year with a $13 million investment in renewable energy.

A solar farm containing 16,000 panels will offset about a quarter of the airport's annual energy consumption, saving $1.5 million in power bills each year, NT Airports says.

Engineering and construction services company UGL has been awarded the tender for the project, expected to be completed by March next year and capable of powering the equivalent of 1000 homes.

The Alice Springs Airport is set to generate about 85 per cent of its energy from solar after more than 2000 extra rooftop panels are installed over a car park.

The third stage of the airport's solar project, being launched on Wednesday, is worth $1.9 million and will be capable of powering the equivalent of 90 houses.
