Renewables to make Tas energy sufficient

The Tasmanian government says it plans to generate an extra 1000 gigawatt hours of power through renewable energy.

An increase in renewable energy will make Tasmania entirely energy self-sufficient, the government says.

It plans to generate an extra 1000 gigawatt hours of renewable energy by 2022 - enough to cover the amount imported from mainland Australia via Basslink.

Ahead of an expected announcement on Wednesday, Energy Minister Matthew Broom said new hydro, wind, biomass and large-scale solar projects would form the backbone of the plan.
