Humanitarian aid organisation Care International says there is a rapidly diminishing opportunity to prevent full scale famine in South Sudan.

Care International's South Sudan Director, Aimee Ansari, says the country is entering its traditional harvest period and is in desperate need of seeds, tools and fishing equipment.

Ms Ansari says there has been some progress in recent months, with 2.2 million fewer people facing hunger than in May.

But she says an estimated 1.5 million people have been displaced since hostilities began in December last year, and the conflict is having a devastating impact on people's ability to get food.

And she told Sacha Payne, relief efforts are proving extremely expensive.
