Malcolm Turnbull says the resignation of his Italian counterpart Matteo Renzi shows some of the challenges of economic reform.

Mr Renzi quit on Monday after two-and-a-half years in office, having vowed to do so if a referendum on constitutional reform failed.

"The path of reform is challenging," Mr Turnbull told reporters in Melbourne.
