Preliminary findings from a probe into a far north Queensland hospital's response to a deadly viral outbreak will be released late next week.

Queensland's chief health officer Dr Jeannette Young has been reviewing the Herberton Hospital, where seven elderly patients have died this year and where the human metapneumovirus (hMPV) virus was detected last month.

Dr Young says she has interviewed families and staff for the preliminary report, which does not have a specific release date.
