Reports of racism at Knights NRL game

Dane Gagai was reportedly the subject of a racist taunt during the Knights' heavy NRL loss to Cronulla on Sunday.

The NRL Integrity Unity is working with the Newcastle club after claims that one of the Knights players was the subject of a racist taunt during their humiliating loss to Cronulla.

Fullback Dane Gagai was allegedly racially abused at the end of Sunday's match, won by the Sharks 62-0 at Hunter Stadium.

Gagai had been in tears after the performance but it was thought to do with the death of his grandmother rather than picking up on any racial slur himself.

Former South Sydney player turned boxer Joe Williams said he heard Gagai called a sooky black c*** by a member of the crowd during Gagai's emotional outpouring, News Corp and Fairfax reported.

Williams told NITV News on Monday that there were "clowns in the audience that were yelling out racial jibes and abuse towards Dane."

The Knights said in a statement on Monday: "The club is aware of an allegation in regards to a racist comment made at the game.

"No formal complaint has been made. The club has informed the NRL integrity unit. The club will work with the NRL integrity unit in relation to this matter."
