Thousands of people have reportedly fled a Kenyan refugee camp after a spate of deadly attacks.

South Sudanese refugees wait outside their tent in Kakuma refugee camp.

It's one of the largest refugee camps in the world providing shelter to 180,000 refugees from more than 20 countries.

The Kakuma refugee camp in north-west Kenya has also recently seen unrest turn to violence, with the United Nations Refugee agency saying at least eight people have died in the past week.

UNHCR says the attempted rape of a refugee child reportedly sparked the fighting between members of different ethnic groups.

Among the dead are refugees from Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and South Sudan.

A Congolese resident - who does not want to be identified - says the violence has forced thousands of Congolese and Burundian refugees to flee the camp for their own safety.

Stranded with the group outside of Kakuma, he told Gode Migerano from SBS Radio's Swahili program, they are too frightened to return.
