Hundreds of residents of Daly River in the Northern Territory's Kimberley region are being evacuated after a major flood warning was issued.
"The Daly River Emergency Plan has been active since last Friday, and the community has been on stand-by for an evacuation," Northern Region Emergency Controller, Assistant Commissioner Matthew Hollamby said.
"Given the current advice from the Bureau of Meteorology that the Daly River will reach major flood levels (on Tuesday), the decision has been made to immediately evacuate the Daly River community."
The evacuation began on Monday night.
Mr Hollamby says about 380 people are at risk, with some residents already self-evacuating, and the remainder are expected to be evacuated using helicopter and then bus to the Foskey Pavilion in Darwin.
Heavy rain of between 50mm to 100mm is expected in the region as a monsoon bears down through the Timor Sea, the Bureau of Meteorology said.
A Recovery Assistance Hotline has been established and anyone with questions should call 1800 700 250.
