SBS reporter Stefan Armbruster says the weather bureau have still predicted a record peak for the southern Queensland town - beating last year's big flooding - but it won't be as big as the 14m+ predictions that had been made.

Armbruster said that the sun came out in the town Thursday morning, leading to a "much more positive mood in town."

Closed roads mean that army Sea King helicopters are set to make supply runs back and forth. But Armbruster said one ac130 plane had been dealt a blow.

"It was struck by lightning, so its effectively grounded now", he said.

There are thirty houses still likely to be flooded in the town and some residents have been told they can stay put for now.

Monday is likely to be the day the river peaks, but 'there could still be changes to that', Armbruster said.
