Resurgent coalition batters ALP: poll

The coalition is ahead of Labor in the latest Fairfax-Ipsos poll and Malcolm Turnbull is easily leading Bill Shorten as preferred prime minister.

The ascension of Malcolm Turnbull as prime minister a month ago continues to batter Labor's chances of winning government, the latest Fairfax-Ipsos poll shows.

The poll, published in The Age and Sydney Morning Herald, shows Labor's primary vote has plummeted to 30 per cent, down from 36 per cent in the same poll in mid-August while the coalition is up seven points over the same period to 45 per cent.

On a two-party preferred basis, the coalition is ahead 53-47 and as preferred prime minister Mr Turnbull is streets ahead with 67 per cent approval to Mr Shorten's 24 per cent.

The two-party preferred figure is based on second preferences as marked by voters in the 2013 federal election.

The government has not led Labor in the Fairfax-Ipsos poll since March 2014, and seems to validate the Liberal Party's decision to remove Tony Abbott in a party room coup in September.

The Greens' vote has also taken a hit - down from 16 per cent two months ago to 14 per cent in the latest poll.

The net approval rating also leaves Mr Turnbull well in front of Mr Shorten.

Sixty-eight per cent of respondents said they approved of Mr Turnbull's performance with 17 per cent disapproving, giving him a rating of 51 per cent overall.

By comparison, 32 per cent approve of Mr Shorten's performance and 56 per cent disapprove, leaving him with a disastrous net approval rating of minus 24 per cent.
