Retail sales flat in July

The Australian Bureau of Statistics has released the official retail sales figures for July.

Australian retail spending was flat in July, official figures show, which missed economists' expectations.

Footwear and personal accessory sales rose 0.6 per cent and cafes, restaurants and takeaway sales were up 0.5 per cent.

However that was offset by a 0.9 per cent fall in department store trade and household goods sales, slipping 0.4 per cent.

Total retail spending was $25.01 billion in July, unchanged from June, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said on Thursday.

The July result was worse than market forecasts of a 0.3 per cent rise in retail trade.
