Retirement on hold for rejuvenated Johnson

Former Test quick Mitchell Johnson is enjoying his late-career form with the Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League.

Mitchell Johnson admits he nearly retired for good ahead of BBL07 but he's been reinvigorated by the Perth Scorchers' winning ways and his own good form.

Plans for a quieter life away from cricket for the former Test quick are on hold for now.

His star turn - 3-13 from four overs - in the unbeaten Scorchers' win over the Melbourne Renegades was the latest piece of evidence in a strong case for his continued involvement in the short form of the game.

After Johnson's retirement from international cricket after his 73rd Test at the end of 2015, he was coaxed into joining the Scorchers for BBL06 for what would be their third title win.

He was surprised to be picked up by the Mumbai Indians in the lucrative Indian Premier League after that and even more so when he was part of their title-winning side.

"It probably would have been a good time to retire completely with two (competition) wins under the belt," Johnson said.

"(But) I've signed on for the Pakistan league, I will put my name in the IPL (auction) and maybe the Caribbean league as well.

"I don't want to be doing too much travel - that's why I stopped - but if I'm playing well and enjoying it then why not?"

If the 36-year-old plays in the Caribbean league he will finish that stint tantalisingly close to BBL08.

Johnson isn't planning that far ahead but is happy with how his body is holding up.

A decision on retirement could come down to his enjoyment levels and how he's coping with the mental demands.

"Twenty20 wasn't my favourite game until last year," he said.

"(But) I actually really enjoyed it because of what (Scorchers coach) Justin Langer does and what the team does.

"I feel loose when I'm out there playing. There's no real (physical) worries."
