Returning Maddinson eyes NSW Shield recall

Nic Maddinson will return to cricket next week through NSW's second XI and has set his sights on a Sheffield Shield recall.

Dropped Test batsman Nic Maddinson is set to return to NSW's second XI and could play in the Blues' next Sheffield Shield game.

The left-hander last week took indefinite leave for personal reasons following a tough period in which he was dropped after three Tests and scored just 75 runs in seven BBL knocks.

Cricket NSW has confirmed Maddinson will play in the Blues' Futures League clash with Western Australia starting on Monday.

The 25-year-old could also line up for the Shield game against Tasmania from Saturday week in Wollongong.

"Looking forward to pulling on the Blues' kit in the Futures League in Perth and very excited for Shield cricket in Wollongong next week!," Maddinson posted on Friday on Twitter.

Maddinson, not playing since the January 28 BBL final, pulled out of NSW's past two Shield matches.

His decision to take leave prompted discussions about player welfare and support for those dropped from national teams.

Batting at No.6, Maddinson was dismissed for a duck in his Test debut against South Africa in late November in Adelaide.

He kept his place for the first two Tests against Pakistan but was dropped after scoring one, four and 22 in three innings.

NSW piled on 523 and 603 in their past two Shield first innings, and the form of their incumbent batsmen meant no guarantee of Maddinson earning an immediate recall.
