Review follows death at NSW mental unit

An investigation is underway and two staff have been stood down following the unexpected death of a patient at a mental health unit in the NSW Illawarra.

Two staff at a NSW Illawarra mental health facility have been stood down pending a review of the circumstances surrounding the recent "unexpected" death of a patient.

Nikola Nastovski, 49, died at the Mirrabook Mental Health Unit of Shellharbour Hospital on May 4.

Chief executive of Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District, Margot Mains, says the death of the Port Kembla man has been referred to the coroner "as is standard practice for any unexpected death in a health service".

"There has been no dismissal of staff; however two staff members have been stood down pending a review of the circumstances," Ms Mains said in a statement on Wednesday.

Mr Nastovski's funeral was held at the St Kliment Macedonian Orthodox Church last week.

"Nikola will be sadly missed by his loving family and many dear friends here and in Macedonia," a funeral notice, issued by his family, reads.

"Nik" was a beloved son, brother, brother-in-law and uncle, the notice said.

The health district will continue to provide support to his family and keep them updated, Ms Mains said.

The incident however is "in no way related to the tragic events" at Shellharbour Hospital's Eloura facility in 2014, she said.

Nearly three years ago, Joseph Gumley, 47, was discovered by hospital staff with fatal injuries after his roommate Paul Hindmarsh bashed his head in with an electric guitar and strangled him with the instrument's lead.

Hindmarsh was found not guilty of murder by way of mental illness at a NSW Supreme Court hearing in 2016.

Ms Mains said the district's mental health service has undertaken significant work in recent years to improve "appropriate clinical care levels and associated observations".

Last week NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard launched a parliamentary inquiry into "all aspects" of the state's mental health system after shocking CCTV footage emerged of a mentally-ill patient who died in a northern NSW facility in June 2014.

Miriam Merten, 46, died of a "traumatic and hypoxic brain injury" after falling at least 25 times in seven hours.

Coroner Jeff Linden found the two nurses on duty failed to take appropriate action and Ms Merten's death "occurred as a result of her admission to the mental health unit of Lismore Base Hospital".

Mr Hazzard also announced a six-month independent review by Chief Psychiatrist Dr Murray Wright including the potential for the complete elimination of seclusion rooms.

The minister on Wednesday chose not to comment on Mr Nastovski's death as the matter was before the coroner.
