Local product Josh Reynolds will captain Canterbury for the first time when he leads an 18-man squad to this week's NRL Auckland Nines.

The Bulldogs have selected a surprisingly strong team, including first-grade regulars Sam Kasiano, David Klemmer and Michael Lichaa.

The club also confirmed Jim Dymock will coach the team in New Zealand, with head coach Des Hasler once against opting to stay in Sydney.

Hasler is the second coach to send a deputy to Auckland, following Canberra's call to keep Ricky Stuart at home.

Canterbury, who will also send rising 20-year-old Marcelo Montoya, have never made it past the pool stage in the event's three-year history.

Canterbury squad: Brad Abbey, TomCarr, MattFrawley, DannyFualalo, Craig Garvey, Kerrod Holland, Sam Kasiano, David Klemmer, LachlanLewis, Michael Lichaa, RhyseMartin, D'Rhys Miller, MarceloMontoya, Tyrone Phillips, Josh Reynolds (capt), ReimisSmith, Renouf To'omaga, FrancisTualau.
